In 2009, Perth Mint marked the 20th anniversary of its Silver Kookaburra series with a new design featuring Australias famous kookaburra. These native birds are part of the kingfisher family, and the laughing kookaburra is the largest member. Right now, 2009 Australian Kookaburra 2 oz Silver Coins are available at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 2009 Australian Kookaburra 2 oz Silver Coin is housed in a clear acrylic capsule and belongs to the Perth Mints 20th-anniversary release. For 2009, the mint struck 1 kilo, 10 oz, 2 oz, and 1 oz versions. The 1 oz coin reached its full limit of 300,000 pieces, while the 1 kilo coin had the next highest mintage at 74,757.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2009 Australian Kookaburra Silver Coin features Queen Elizabeth II. This portrait, created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley for The Royal Mint, shows the Queen in right-profile relief wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. The inscriptions include ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA, and 2 DOLLARS.
Reverse
On the reverse side of the 2009 Kookaburra 2 oz Silver Coin, a kookaburra rests on a branch, shown in slight left-profile relief. The design includes the P20 privy mark to celebrate 20 years of the Kookaburra series. The inscriptions read THE AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA, 2 OZ 999 SILVER, 2009, and the P20 privy mark.
History
Kookaburras are a familiar sight in eastern Australia. Their loud, laughing call makes them one of the most recognizable birds on the continent. Theyve been part of Australias wildlife for thousands of years, often found in wooded areas where they hunt insects, small reptiles, and other preyhelping to keep local ecosystems balanced.
