The Lunar Series II collection from the Perth Mint ran from 2008 to 2019. The series featured unique designs for each of the 12 different animals in the Zodiac. The Year of the Ox came in 2009 and the Perth Mint offered distinctive weights for the gold bullion coin in keeping with previous releases. Among those was a 1/2 oz gold bullion coin. Provident Metals now has the 2009 Australian Lunar Ox 1/2 oz Gold Coin available to you for online purchasing.
Highlights:
When you purchase one of these 2009 Australian Lunar Ox 1/2 oz Gold Coins, you will receive your specimen inside of a protective plastic capsule. The coins in this listing represent just the second design release of the Lunar Series II program from the Perth Mint.
Obverse
On the obverse side of the 2009 Australian Lunar Ox 1/2 oz Gold Coin is Queen Elizabeth II. This is the fifth-generation effigy of the Queen to feature on Australian coins and was designed originally in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley for the Royal Mint of England. In this design, the Queen is shown in right-profile relief wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. Inscriptions include Elizabeth II, Australia, 2009, 50 Dollars, and 1/2 oz 9999 Gold.
Reverse
The reverse face of the 2009 Australian Lunar Ox 1/2 oz Gold Coin features the image of an adult ox lying in a field on a small outcrop of grass. There are bamboo branches above the head of the ox with an inscription of the Chinese symbol for an ox and Year of the Ox on this face of the coin. You will also find the P mint mark of the Perth Mint on this face.
History
The Ox is second in the 12-year cycle of the Zodiac as it was the second animal to arrive at a meeting with the Jade Emperor. The ox would have been first if not for the clever mouse that hitched a ride across a river only to hop off the ox just before the finish line to arrive first.
