Obverse

The obverse of the 2009 Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coin features Queen Elizabeth II in right-profile relief. This portrait, created by Susanna Blunt in 2003, is the fourth and final effigy of Her Majesty to appear on Canadian coinage. The inscriptions here include ELIZABETH II, 200 DOLLARS, and 2009.

Reverse

The reverse of 2009 Maple Leaf 1 oz Gold Coins showcases the sugar maple leaf, a design created by Walter Ott in 1979. This iconic symbol has been a hallmark of the Gold Maple Leaf series and has appeared on all Maple Leaf coins, including those in silver, platinum, and palladium. Inscriptions include CANADA, 99999, FINE GOLD, and 1 OZ OR PUR.

History

Canadas gold mining industry grew significantly in the 20th century, with substantial gold finds in Ontario, Quebec, and the Northwest Territories. These developments led to the establishment of large-scale mining and refining operations, making Canada one of the leading gold producers in the world. Modern advancements in refining techniques, such as the cyanide process, have enhanced the quality and purity of Canadian gold.
