The Gold Panda series, first introduced by the Chinese Mint in 1982, began with four coin weights, later expanding in 1983 to add a fifth weight, giving collectors and investors more choices. Known for its changing Giant Panda designs each year, this series offers a refreshing take on the beloved animal and has inspired similar annual updates from other mints around the globe. Provident Metals is pleased to offer 2009 Chinese Panda 1/20 oz Gold Coins.
Highlights:
Each 2009 Chinese Panda 1/20 oz Gold Coin available here is encased in a protective plastic pouch. The 1/20 oz coin was issued between 1983 and 2015, carrying a face value of 5 Yuan from 1983 to 2000, which then changed to 20 Yuan from 2001 to 2015. Starting in 2016, the coins weight shifted to 1 Gram gold as part of the mints adjustments.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2009 Chinese Panda Gold Coin features the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests, an important cultural landmark located at the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. This sacred Taoist temple is a cherished symbol within Chinese heritage.
Reverse
On the reverse side of 2009 Panda 1/20 oz Gold Coins, two young Giant Pandas are seen among bamboo stalks. The artistic details, using varied finishes, bring out the contrasting black and white fur of the pandas, adding life and realism to the coins design.
History
While the Giant Panda is adored worldwide, it is still classified as Vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Factors such as habitat loss, deforestation, and bamboo shortages continue to threaten this species, with an estimated 1,800 pandas remaining in the wild. Conservation efforts, including dedicated protected areas, have been critical in helping to stabilize panda populations.
