First issued in 1981, the Mexican Gold Libertad stands as the oldest coin in the Mexican Libertad Series. These coins are available in several different weights, including 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, and 1/20 oz, with the 1 oz coin being one of the original options released in 1981. Since 2002, the Mexican Mint has produced these coins each year. Right now, 2009 Mexican Libertad 1 oz Gold Coins are available at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 2009 Mexican Libertad 1 oz Gold Coin comes packaged in a protective flip. Although the mintage of 6,200 coins may appear small, this was the largest mintage for the series between 2003 and 2022.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2009 Mexican Libertad Gold Coin features the modern Mexican coat of arms, which depicts a golden eagle perched on a cactus as it battles a snake. This design is based on the historic Aztec Codex Mendoza. Surrounding this central image are 10 smaller designs that showcase Mexicos previous coats of arms, including a second version of the eagle and snake at the top of the coin. Inscriptions include ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS.
Reverse
On the reverse, the 2009 Libertad 1 oz Gold Coin features the stunning Winged Victory. Symbolizing Mexicos fight for independence, Winged Victory is shown holding a laurel wreath in one hand and broken chains in the other. She stands on the Mexican Independence Victory Column, with the famous volcanic peaks of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl in the background. Inscriptions read 1 ONZA, ORO PURO, 2009 LEY .999, and the mint mark.
History
In its early years, production of the Gold Libertad was inconsistent. While the 1 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1/4 oz coins were initially issued in 1981, no additional coins were struck until 1991, when production resumed along with the introduction of the 1/10 oz and 1/20 oz coins. These five coin options continued until 1994, paused, and then returned in 2002, with production remaining consistent since then.
