When Augustus Saint-Gaudens was commissioned by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1905 to help redesign American coinage, he had a vision for Lady Liberty that was intended to be struck in high relief. Though the US Mint lacked the technology at the time to bring his vision to life, by 2009, the US Mint was more than capable of achieving his original vision a century after the fact. Obverse
The obverse of the 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin comes with a vision of Lady Liberty. Her full-length figure appears in front-facing relief with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The background field comes with the U.S. Capitol Building, rays of sunshine on the horizon, and a ring of 50 stars. Inscriptions on this side include LIBERTY, the ASC signature mark of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, and the Roman numeral date mark of MMIX.
Reverse
On the reverse side of the 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle is a depiction of the American bald eagle. The bald eagle is featured here in left-profile relief as it glides over the rising sun. The eagles sleek frame is surrounded by rays of light from the sun that reach out to the edges of the coin field. The inscriptions on this side read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, TWENTY DOLLARS, and IN GOD WE TRUST.
History
The design Augustus Saint-Gaudens created in 1907 for the $20 Double Eagle Gold Coin was used on the coin through 1933. In 1986, it was revived for use on the obverse of the American Eagle Gold bullion coin. The 2009 release of his original design combination from the Double Eagle brought to life his high-relief vision for the design for the first time.
