Augustus Saint-Gaudens 1907 depiction of Lady Liberty has been held up time and again as the greatest American coin design of the 20th century. The popular design not only graced the $20 Double Eagle Gold Coins from 1907 to 1933, but it also features on the modern American Eagle Gold Bullion coin from the US Mint. One thing has been missing over the century since his death in 1907: a coin with his true vision of Liberty. The US Mint achieved that goal in 2009. Today, you have the chance to buy certified 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coins online from Provident Metals.

The design that Augustus Saint-Gaudens conceived in 1907 was intended to be struck in high relief on American gold coins. However, the US Mint did not have the technological capacity at the time to deliver a strong, high-relief image on coins with consistency. There was also a concern that a high-relief strike on circulation coins would quickly wear down. In 2009, the US Mint had the technology to realize Saint-Gaudens original vision.

Obverse

Lady Liberty is found on the obverse of 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coins. This effigy shows Liberty in front-facing relief as she strides toward you with a troch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The stunning ultra-high-relief strike comes through in this design with enhanced 3D relief on Libertys figures as it contrasts the sunken field of the coin. Inscriptions on this side include LIBERTY, MMIX, and the artist initials of ASC. The MMIX is the Roman numeral date mark for 2009.

Reverse

An American bald eagle glides through the sky on the reverse of the 2009 Double Eagle Gold Coin. Saint-Gaudens other creation for the $20 Double Eagle in 1907, this bald eagle soars through the design as the sun rises from the lower edge of the design field. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, TWENTY DOLLARS, and IN GOD WE TRUST. These coins also have edge-lettering that reads E PLURIBUS UNUM, with stars separating each letter. There are 13 of those stars along the rim, a nod to the original 13 colonies that formed the United States.

History

Saint-Gaudens original design in 1907 had a ring of 46 stars on the obverse, not 50, as there were only 46 states in the Union at the time. It also did not have the national motto on the reverse.

Ordering

These 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coins are near-perfect specimens. Mint State 69 coins have full, original mint luster and a maximum of two minor detractions. Acceptable detractions include only minuscule contact marks or hairlines and these must be outside the primary focal points. Proof-like coins are those with frost-like designs and mirror-like fields.
