When Augustus Saint-Gaudens developed his Liberty design that eventually featured on the $20 Double Eagle Gold coin, it was intended to be struck in high relief. In 1907 though, the United States Mint lacked the technological capacity to realize this vision. In 2009 however, the US Mint was up to the task. Right now, you can get 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coins in perfect condition at Provident Metals.

Obverse

On the obverse side is Augustus Saint-Gaudens original 1907 strike of the Liberty design. His original design in 1907 included Liberty with a large torch in her right hand, an olive branch in her left hand, rays of sunshine emanating from behind her figure, and the US Capitol Building visible in the background at her feet. Another interesting note is the circle of 46 stars around her. When Saint-Gaudens created this design in 1907, the US had 46 states. In 1912, two more stars were added to the original coin series following Arizona and New Mexico being admitted to the Union. The modern American Eagle Gold bullion coins have two more stars for the states of Hawaii and Alaska.

Reverse

The reverse face of these 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coins includes Saint-Gaudens 1908 design for the $20 Double Eagle Gold coin. Much of the design is the same as the original 1907 issue as the eagle glides in flight with its wings back behind its figure and the sun cresting the bottom of the design field. The difference between 1907 and 1908 was the inclusion of the national motto In God We Trust along the ridge of the sun as its rays rise up toward the eagle.

History

The 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin was the realization of Saint-Gaudens original vision for the coin. Both surfaces of the coin are sunken following a high-pressure strike to create greater 3D visuals for both designs. Along the outer rim of this coin are stars and the inscription E Pluribus Unum.
