Obverse
On the obverse side of 2010 American Eagle Gold Coins is a front-facing depiction of Liberty as designed in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. She is featured walking toward the viewer with a torch held out in her right hand and a large olive branch in her left hand. Rays of sunshine frame her figure from behind as she walks away from Washington DC with the US Capitol Building visible at her feet in the background. There is a ring of 50 stars around her figure and inscriptions of Liberty above her head and 2010 within the rays of sunshine.
Reverse
The reverse of 2010 American Eagle 1 oz Gold Coins features a family of American bald eagles. In use on the series since its 1986 debut, the depiction was created for the introduction of the series by Miley Busiek. The image features a male eagle flying over the family nest as a female shelters a young hatchling under her wing. Inscriptions on this face of the coin read United States of America, E Pluribus Unum, In God We Trust, and 1 oz. Fine Gold 50 Dollars.
History
The 1 oz gold coin in the American Eagle Series has proven the most popular in the collection most years. The 2010 release of the American Eagle 1 oz Gold marked the last time the coin surpassed one million coins released in a single year. With 1.125 million coins sold in 2010, the mintage for the American Eagle Gold Coin that year is the fifth-highest mintage in the 1 oz gold coins history.
