The Australian Koala Series began in 2007 as a silver coin collection from the Perth Mint that features one of Australias most iconic animals. Originally, the series included coins in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 10 oz, and 1 Kilo sizes, but it has since been narrowed down to just the 1 oz and 1 Kilo weights. A key trait of the series is the introduction of a fresh koala design on the reverse side every year. Provident Metals now offers the 2010 Australian Koala 1 Kilo Silver Coin.

Highlights:

  • Arrives in a protective plastic capsule!
  • 4th year of issue for the Australian Koala Series!
  • Declared mintage of 30,692 coins!
  • Contains 1 Kilo (32.15 Troy oz) of .999 pure silver.
  • Bears a face value of $30 (AUD) backed by the federal government of Australia.
  • The obverse features a bust of Queen Elizabeth II.
  • On the reverse is a depiction of a koala climbing along a gum tree branch.
  • P mint mark from the Perth Mint.

Each 2010 Australian Koala 1 Kilo Silver Coin available here is packaged in an individual plastic capsule. The mintage for this coin in 2010 totaled 30,692 pieces, making it the second most produced coin in that years lineup after the 1 oz version. The other silver coins issued by the Perth Mint in 2010 were the 1/2 oz (13,315 coins) and 10 oz (12,928 coins).

Obverse

On the obverse of 2010 Australian Koala Silver Coins is Queen Elizabeth II. This design shows the Queen facing right while wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. Created by Ian Rank-Broadley in 1998, this portrait was widely featured on coins throughout the Queens reign. The inscriptions include ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA, 2010, and 30 DOLLARS.

Reverse

The reverse design on the 2010 Koala 1 Kilo Silver Coin shows a koala making its way across a gum tree branch. Eucalyptus trees are more than just a food sourcethey also provide the environment that koalas live in. These animals spend most of their lives among the branches, often resting for long hours each day to conserve energy and avoid predators. The inscriptions read 1 KILO 999 SILVER and the P mint mark.

History

Koalas have a special connection with eucalyptus trees, often called gum trees. These trees make up nearly all of a koala’s diet. Although toxic to most mammals, eucalyptus leaves are safe for koalas thanks to their unique digestive systems. Koalas have developed bacteria in their guts that help neutralize the harmful parts of the leaves, and their strong teeth allow them to chew through the fibrous material with ease.
