Lunar-themed coins from the Perth Mint started in 1996 with the introduction of the Lunar Series I collection. In each case, the Perth Mint has used separate designs for its gold and silver coins in any given Lunar Series. For example, this 2010 Australian Lunar Tiger Gold Coin has the head of a tiger in front-facing relief, while the 2020 Australian Lunar Tiger Silver Coins featured the entire tiger standing on all four legs in the design field.
Obverse
On the obverse side of the 2010 Australian Lunar Tiger 2 oz Gold Coin is the image of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is featured here in right-profile relief in the fifth-generation Australian depiction of the monarch on coins. Created for the Royal Mint of England in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley, this design is the most common at the moment on British and Commonwealth design as it has been in use for two decades.
Reverse
The reverse field of the 2020 Australian Lunar Tiger Gold Coin features the depiction of a tigers head. This powerful design captures the sheer size of a tiger with its imposing face staring directly at the viewer. Inscriptions indicate the Mandarin symbol for a tiger above the head and Year of the Tiger below the head.
History
The Lunar Series II collection from the Perth Mint ran from 2008 to 2019. The Perth Mint is the oldest operating mint in Australia. Founded in 1899, the mint was constructed as a third and final Royal Mint of England facility on the continent, but would go on to serve as a default coining center for Australia as it went through federation and eventually earned full independence. At that point, the Royal Australian Mint was built in Canberra and control of the Perth Mint passed to the state government of Western Australia.
