When the First Spouse Series was announced by the U.S. Mint, a provision was included for those presidents who were not married while in office. Rather than featuring a spouse, those releases would contain a Lady Liberty design that was used on coinage during the presidents term. Here, James Buchanan, who was never married, is joined by the Liberty Head Quarter Eagle portrait designed by Christian Gobrecht. Now, 2010 Proof US Mint First Spouse Buchanans Liberty 1/2 oz Gold Coins can be ordered online from Provident Metals in certified-perfect condition.

On the obverse of 2010 Proof US Mint First Spouse Buchanans Liberty 1/2 oz Gold Coins, there is a bust of Lady Liberty. In this portrait, Liberty faces left in a design by Christian Gobrecht. There are inscriptions also reading 2010 15TH PRESIDENCY, IN GOD WE TRUST, 1857-1861.

The reverse face of these US Mint First Spouse Buchanans Liberty 1/2 oz Gold Coins features a youthful James Buchanan writing at his desk. There are also inscriptions on the reverse field that read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, $10 1/2 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD.

Though never married, James Buchanan was engaged at one time in his life. He met Anne Caroline Coleman in 1818 in Lancaster and the two became engaged the following year. However, Buchanan spent the majority of his time at his law firm and often went weeks without seeing his betrothed. When rumors began to circle that Buchanan was marrying Coleman only for her money, she broke off the engagement. Buchanan would remain a bachelor for the rest of his days.
