When the First Spouse Series was announced by the U.S. Mint, a provision was included for those presidents who were not married while in office. Rather than featuring a spouse, those releases would contain a Lady Liberty design that was used on coinage during the presidents term. Here, James Buchanan, who was never married, is joined by the Liberty Head Quarter Eagle portrait designed by Christian Gobrecht. Now, 2010 Proof US Mint First Spouse Buchanans Liberty 1/2 oz Gold Coins can be ordered online from Provident Metals in certified-perfect condition.

History
Though never married, James Buchanan was engaged at one time in his life. He met Anne Caroline Coleman in 1818 in Lancaster and the two became engaged the following year. However, Buchanan spent the majority of his time at his law firm and often went weeks without seeing his betrothed. When rumors began to circle that Buchanan was marrying Coleman only for her money, she broke off the engagement. Buchanan would remain a bachelor for the rest of his days.
