Coins with a certified “perfect” grade from one of the world’s leading coin grading services are some of the most prized items on the modern collectors’ market: the kind of items that provide flawless visual appeal and are free of any post-production imperfection, even seen under magnification. The team at Provident Metals now offers such “perfect” coins from the U.S. Mint’s First Spouse Gold Coin Program, a series of gorgeous gold collectibles that celebrate the lifelong partners of those who served in the White House from its very beginnings. In cases where the President was a bachelor, Lady Liberty’s image is paired with him, as is the case with the 2010 Proof US Mint First Spouse Buchanan’s Liberty 1/2 oz Gold Coin.

  • Comes in a plastic PCGS slab with a label that shows its certified Proof 70 grade!
  • The 15th entry in the U.S. Mint’s First Spouse Gold Coin program!
  • Supplied from a limited stock of certified perfect coins!
  • Contains 1/2 Troy oz of .9999 pure gold, struck in a Proof finish.
  • Face value of $10 issued by the United States.
  • The obverse features a bust of Lady Liberty.
  • The reverse features James Buchanan working at his desk.

The 2010 Proof US Mint First Spouse Buchanan’s Liberty Gold Coin is struck in a half-ounce of pure gold with a proof-quality finish whose mirrored background accentuates its raised elements. Its certification comes from the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS), and it ships in a secure plastic slab.

Lady Liberty appears on the obverse field as per Christian Gobrechet’s original design once seen on the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles (minted between 1840 and 1907). She is accompanied by thirteen decorative stars, the inscriptions “1857” and “1861” — the years of Buchanan’s Presidency — and the lettering “2010,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “15TH PRESIDENCY.”

James Buchanan dominates the reverse field, pictured as a young man working at a desk, probably the law firm of his youth. The image is accompanied by the phrase “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and inscriptions confirming the coin’s country of issue, face value, and purity.

The Presidential One Dollar Coin Act in 2005 set in motion a coin series celebrating the service of America’s Presidents and alongside it a First Spouse Gold Coin program that would pay tribute to their spouses. Presidents who were bachelors or widowers by the time they reached the White House are represented by their symbolic ties to Lady Liberty instead, one such being James Buchanan. Serving as President between the years 1857 and 1861, he was Abraham Lincoln’s immediate predecessor and is notable for having been the last President to have been born in the 18th century.
