This 2010-W US Mint First Spouse Jane Pierce 1/2 oz Gold Coin is the 15th release in the First Spouse program. Because President John Tyler had two First Ladies, his presidency is represented by two separate coin issues. Each of these coins holds a Mint State 70 certification, meaning it exhibits full mint luster with no visible flaws. The slab includes a label hand-signed by David Hall, co-founder of the Professional Coin Grading Service.

Obverse

The obverse of the 2010-W US Mint First Spouse Jane Pierce Gold Coin features a portrait of Jane Pierce, capturing her reserved yet dignified presence. As First Lady, she preferred to stay out of the public eye, though she gradually took on select social responsibilities. The inscriptions here read JANE PIERCE, IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, 2010, 14TH, 1853-1857, and the W mint mark.

Reverse

On the reverse of 2010-W First Spouse Jane Pierce 1/2 oz Gold Coins, Jane Pierce is depicted inside the Old Senate Chambers viewing gallery at the U.S. Capitol. Though she did not actively engage in politics, she occasionally observed Senate debates, reflecting her quiet interest in national affairs. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, $10, 1/2 OZ., and .9999 FINE GOLD.

History

Jane Pierce was one of the most private First Ladies in U.S. history. Married to Franklin Pierce, the 14th president, she endured personal hardship that defined much of her time in the White House. Shortly before her husbands inauguration, the Pierces lost their only child, Benjamin, in a tragic train accident. Overcome with grief, Jane largely withdrew from public life in the early years of her husbands presidency.
