History

Jane Pierce was the wife of Franklin Pierce, the 14th President of the United States. Unlike many of her predecessors, she largely avoided public engagements due to a deep personal tragedy. Just before President Pierce took office, their only child, Benjamin, died in a train accident. The loss had a profound effect on Jane Pierce, and she spent much of the early presidency in mourning, rarely participating in social functions.
