The American Eagle Gold coin is guaranteed by the US government to contain its stated weight in pure gold. The composition of these coins is 91.67% gold (22 karats), 3% silver, and 5.33% copper. The silver and copper are included to create a more wear-resistant coin. These coins are in BU condition, though they may have some minor flaws from the coining process. The mintage count for the 2011 1/2 oz American Eagle Gold coins was 70,000, down slightly from the 81,000 in 2010. Provident Metals presently has a 2011 1/2 oz American Eagle Gold Coin available for purchase.
In 2011, the price of gold continued trending higher, for the twelfth year in a row. The price of gold started the year at $1,388.50, rose to an all-time record high of almost $1,900.00 in September, before ending the year at $1,531.00 per ounce. During the time period from 2001-2012, the price of gold amazingly increased over 500%!
The obverse of the American Gold Eagle depicts a full-length figure of Lady Liberty. She appears to be walking right off the coin at you. Her hair is flowing in the breeze. She has a torch in her outstretched right hand and an olive branch in her left hand. To the left of her right foot is a small depiction of the Capitol building. This is a version of the Lady Liberty design that Augustus Saint-Gaudens created for the $20 gold coin, or double eagle. The Gold Eagle includes the inscriptions LIBERTY and 2011.
The reverse of the American Gold Eagle depicts a male eagle, carrying an olive branch in its claws, flying towards its family in a nest. This was designed by Miley Busiek and sculpted by Sherl J. Winter. Busieks design reflects the importance of family in America. It includes the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, 1/2 OZ. FINE GOLD, and 25 DOLLARS.
The American Gold Eagle is an official gold bullion coin that was authorized under the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985. The coin comes in 4 weights – 1/10 ounce, 1/4 ounce, 1/2 ounce, and 1 ounce and this weight is marked on the coins to avoid confusion with the pre-1933 $10 gold coins. By law, the gold must come from sources within the US.
