The American Eagle Gold coin is guaranteed by the US government to contain its stated weight in pure gold. The composition of these coins is 91.67% gold (22 karats), 3% silver, and 5.33% copper. The silver and copper are included to create a more wear-resistant coin. These coins are in BU condition, though they may have some minor flaws from the coining process. The mintage count for the 2011 1/2 oz American Eagle Gold coins was 70,000, down slightly from the 81,000 in 2010. Obverse

The obverse of the American Gold Eagle depicts a full-length figure of Lady Liberty. She appears to be walking right off the coin at you. Her hair is flowing in the breeze. She has a torch in her outstretched right hand and an olive branch in her left hand. To the left of her right foot is a small depiction of the Capitol building. This is a version of the Lady Liberty design that Augustus Saint-Gaudens created for the $20 gold coin, or double eagle. The Gold Eagle includes the inscriptions LIBERTY and 2011.

Reverse

The reverse of the American Gold Eagle depicts a male eagle, carrying an olive branch in its claws, flying towards its family in a nest. This was designed by Miley Busiek and sculpted by Sherl J. Winter. Busieks design reflects the importance of family in America. It includes the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, 1/2 OZ. FINE GOLD, and 25 DOLLARS.

History

The American Gold Eagle is an official gold bullion coin that was authorized under the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985. The coin comes in 4 weights – 1/10 ounce, 1/4 ounce, 1/2 ounce, and 1 ounce and this weight is marked on the coins to avoid confusion with the pre-1933 $10 gold coins. By law, the gold must come from sources within the US.
