History

The South fared surprisingly well in the early days of the American Civil War, often due to able generalship — particularly Robert E. Lee — that was able to make up for its logistical and economic disadvantages in the short term. Gettysburg, however, was where the tide began to turn. The last major attempt by Lee to invade the North was ended by a Union victory that came at the appalling price of fifty thousand casualties, but that definitively gave the Northern cause the upper hand. Work began to raise memorials at the battle site only a year later.
