The Union victory at the Battle of Gettysburg was one of the bloodiest encounters in the American Civil War, and also one of the most consequential, effectively ending the phase of the war in which the Confederacy was on the offensive and marking the turning of the tide in the Union’s favor. The field of battle was also the location of the Gettysburg Address, Abraham Lincoln’s most famous piece of oratory. In modern times, the site is marked by the Gettysburg National Military Park and commemorated in the US Mint’s America the Beautiful Quarters series by the 2011 ATB Gettysburg 5 oz Silver Coin, available from Provident Metals.
The 2011 ATB Gettysburg Silver Coin is a tribute to one of America’s most famous battlefields rendered in five full ounces of pure silver. It comes in a protective plastic slab that preserves its mirrored, proof-like finish and is sure to be a hit with investors and collectors. The coin is graded MS 69 by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC), meaning it’s a near-perfect item with original mint luster and a maximum of two noticeable flaws, such as potential hairlines outside the coin’s primary focal points or minuscule contact marks. Provident Metals ships each item in a protective plastic slab.
The coin’s obverse side carries a famous and familiar portrait of George Washington, joined by the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “QUARTER DOLLAR.”
The iconic 72nd Pennsylvania Infantry Monument is featured on the reverse, along with the inscriptions “GETTYSBURG,” “PENNSYLVANIA,” “2011” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
The South fared surprisingly well in the early days of the American Civil War, often due to able generalship — particularly Robert E. Lee — that was able to make up for its logistical and economic disadvantages in the short term. Gettysburg, however, was where the tide began to turn. The last major attempt by Lee to invade the North was ended by a Union victory that came at the appalling price of fifty thousand casualties, but that definitively gave the Northern cause the upper hand. Work began to raise memorials at the battle site only a year later.
