Obverse

She is depicted in right-profile relief, adorned with the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland diamond tiara. Surrounding Her Majesty are unique identifiers of the coin. These inscriptions include ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA, 1 DOLLAR, and IRB.

Reverse

Elisa Martinson’s remarkable portrayal of the Kookaburra takes center stage on the reverse of the 2011 Australian Kookaburra Silver Coin. Perched atop a tree stump, this iconic bird gazes skyward. Inscriptions include AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA, 2011, and 1 OZ 999 SILVER.

History

The Perth Mint opened its doors in 1899. As the last of three colonial branches of the United Kingdom’s Royal Mint in Australia, it played a vital role in refining gold during the Western Australian gold rush and minting gold sovereigns for the British Empire. Later, the Perth Mint was transferred to the state government of Western Australia after the establishment of the Royal Australian Mint.
