The Perth Mint introduced its first lunar-themed coin series in 1996 with the launch of Lunar Series I, featuring designs inspired by the 12 animals of the Chinese Zodiac. This series set the foundation for future collections, including the Lunar Series II program, which debuted in 2008 and continued until 2019. Right now, Provident Metals offers the 2011 Australian Lunar Rabbit 5 oz Silver Coin.
Highlights:
Each 2011 Australian Lunar Rabbit 5 oz Silver Coin is individually housed in a protective plastic flip. The 5 oz coin had the second-lowest mintage of all silver weights in this release, with just 8,030 pieces available. The only denomination with a lower mintage was the 10 Kilo coin, which had just 173 struck. The most widely issued coin in the series was the 1 oz version, reaching its full mintage cap of 300,000 coins.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2011 Australian Lunar Rabbit Silver Coin features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Designed in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley for The Royal Mint, this right-profile effigy was widely used on Australian coins. The Queen is shown wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. The inscriptions include ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA, 5 OZ 999 SILVER, 2011, and 8 DOLLARS.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 2011 Lunar Rabbit 5 oz Silver Coin, two rabbits are depicted in a natural setting. One adult rabbit and its young kit are nestled among plants and tree branches, resting and foraging in a peaceful environment. The inscriptions read YEAR OF THE RABBIT, the P mint mark, and the Chinese symbol for the rabbit.
History
The Year of the Rabbit is the fourth animal in the Chinese Zodiacs 12-year cycle. This zodiac year is associated with calmness, diplomacy, and steady progress. Those born under this sign are often described as gentle, communicative, and compassionate.
