The reverse face of the 2011-P Burnished ATB Gettysburg 5 oz Silver Coin includes the statue monument in Gettysburg National Military Park honoring the 72nd Pennsylvania Regiment. The statue was erected on the site of Cemetery Ridge in 1891 to honor the men of the 72nd who famously beat back the Confederates during Picketts Charge, a pivotal moment in the three-day battle.

Gettysburg was one of the most important battles in American history and a pivotal engagement of the American Civil War. Gettysburg marked the furthest northward incursion of Confederate forces. It appeared at one point as though the Confederates would carry the day, but Union forces managed to swing the momentum in their favor and capture a critical victory. The Battle of Gettysburg resulted in nearly 50,000 casualties between the two sides and is considered the bloodiest battle of the war.
