The Krugerrand is the first gold coin to contain exactly one troy ounce of gold. For numerous years, the Krugerrand accounted for 89% of the global gold coin market and stood alone as the only gold bullion coin available to the international market. Despite the consequences Apartheid had on the allure of the Krugerrand, it still remained one of the worlds leading brand names, and with the ascent of Nelson Mandela to the office of President of South Africa, the coin regained its status as one of the leading gold bullion coins traded worldwide in the 1990s.

Obverse

For the obverse, the design is an effigy of the former Boer leader and President of South Africa. Interestingly, the coin was named after him to honor his feats as a South African leader against British forces. The design was based on the imagery created by Otto Schultz which was used first on the South African Pound gold coin.

Reverse

For the reverse, the side profile of a single springbok is depicted. It is flanked by the date, with the notation 1 oz. fine gold with the denomination Krugerrand above. The denomination remains a creative combination of Paul Krugers name and the official South African currency, the Rand.
