Obverse

On the obverse side of the 2011-W Proof American Eagle Gold Coin, youll see Liberty as designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. She stands front-facing with a torch raised in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. Encircling the design are stars, with rays of sunlight shining out behind her. The inscriptions include LIBERTY, 2011, ASG, and the W mint mark.

Reverse

The reverse of the 2011-W Proof Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coin shows a family of bald eagles. The design, created by Miley Busiek in 1986, includes a female eagle in the nest with hatchlings while the male eagle flies above with an olive branch in its talons. This image has been a mainstay of the series since its start. The inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM, 1/2 OZ FINE GOLD, and 25 DOLLARS.

History

Saint-Gaudens Liberty is often viewed as one of the most iconic American coin designs. The flowing robe and confident stride set against the suns rays helped bring a sense of motion and artistry to U.S. coins at a time when many designs were more static.
