Garfield exchanged vows on November 11, 1858, after a courtship that began during their time at Geauga Seminary. Together, they were blessed with five sons and two daughters.

The obverse side of the 2011-W Proof First Spouse Lucretia Garfield 1/2 oz Gold Coin presents an elegant bust of the former First Lady. Lucretia Garfield’s time as First Lady spanned from March to September 1881, owing to her husband’s relatively short presidency. Inscriptions include LUCRETIA GARFIELD, IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, 2011, 20th, 1881, and the W mint mark.

Flip the 2011-W Proof US Mint First Spouse Lucretia Garfield Gold Coin to reveal a captivating image of Lucretia Garfield at an easel, paying homage to her profound love for the arts. The Garfields established a grand residence in Washington D.C., featuring a dedicated room where Lucretia could freely indulge in her passion for painting. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, $10, 1/2 OZ., and .9999 FINE GOLD.

After her husband’s death, Lucretia sought solace in spiritualism and attempted to communicate with him through sances, which was a practice somewhat common at the time.
