The US Mint introduced the First Spouse Gold Coin series in 2007 to recognize the women who have served as First Lady of the United States. Each 1/2 oz gold coin in this collection features designs that reflect the causes and contributions of the First Lady depicted. Right now, the 2011-W US Mint First Spouse Julia Grant 1/2 oz Gold Coin is available online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
All 2011-W US Mint First Spouse Julia Grant 1/2 oz Gold Coins offered here are certified Mint State 70. This means the coin has no visible imperfections and maintains its full original luster. This issue was the 19th overall release in the First Spouse series.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2011-W US Mint First Spouse Julia Grant Gold Coin features a detailed portrait of Julia Grant. Known for her warm personality and sociable nature, she was a popular figure in Washington D.C. Her presence helped improve relations between Northern and Southern elites during the Reconstruction Era. The inscriptions include JULIA GRANT, IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, 2011, 18th, 1869-1877, and the W mint mark.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 2011-W First Spouse Julia Grant 1/2 oz Gold Coin depicts Julia Grant as a young woman riding horseback on her familys plantation in White Haven, Missouri. She is shown alongside Ulysses S. Grant, whom she met in 1844 before marrying him in 1848. The inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, $10, 1/2 OZ., and .9999 FINE GOLD.
History
Julia Grant played an important role in Washington D.C. social and political circles during her time as First Lady. She was a supportive partner to Ulysses S. Grant, both during his military service in the Civil War and later during his presidency as the 18th President of the United States.
