Kookaburras are unique birds from Australia and New Guinea. Theyre part of the kingfisher family and stand out because of their large heads and strong, pointed beaks. These birds have been a regular feature on Perth Mints silver coin series since 1990. Right now, Provident Metals offers the 2012 Australian Kookaburra 1 Kilo Silver Coin.
Highlights:
Each 2012 Australian Kookaburra 1 Kilo Silver Coin is housed in a plastic capsule for protection. This release included three versions: 1 oz, 10 oz, and 1 Kilo. The 1 oz coin had the highest mintage at 500,000 coins, while the 1 Kilo coin followed with 51,596 coins produced.
Obverse
The obverse design on this 2012 Australian Kookaburra Silver Coin shows Queen Elizabeth II in profile. This image was designed by Ian Rank-Broadley and introduced in 1998. It shows the Queen wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara and is a common portrait used on Australian currency during this time. Inscriptions include ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA, and 30 DOLLARS.
Reverse
On the reverse of 2012 Kookaburra 1 Kilo Silver Coins, youll see a detailed depiction of a kookaburra sitting on a branch. These birds are excellent hunters, using their strong beaks to catch everything from bugs to lizards and even small snakes. Inscriptions read AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA, 2012, 1 KILO 999 SILVER, and the P mint mark.
History
The laughing kookaburra, the largest member of its species, is known for its distinct call and woodland camouflage. It has a light cream body, brown wings, a dark stripe near the eyes, and touches of blue on its feathers that help it blend into the forest.
