The coins come from the 2012 release of Australian Kookaburras. While the overall release of the coins came with a mintage of 500,000 coins, up from 300,000 coins in 2011, the Lunar Privy release featured only 80,000 silver coins. Each one of these coins has a Year of the Dragon privy on the reverse.
Obverse
Queen Elizabeth II is on the obverse side of 2012 Australian Kookaburra Dragon Privy Silver Coins. Her Majesty is shown here in the fifth-generation Australian design, one that was created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley for the Royal Mint of England. The design element shows the Queen in right-profile relief with the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara on her head. The inscriptions on this field of the coin read ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA, and 1 DOLLAR.
Reverse
A kookaburra is found in the reverse design of the 2012 Australian Kookaburra Dragon Privy 1 oz Silver Coin. The image shows a large kookaburra on the perch of a gum tree with leaves from the tree surrounding it. In the lower-left field, there is a circular privy mark with a Chinese dragon inside. The inscriptions on this side include AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA, 2012, 1 OZ, 999, and SILVER.
History
The Chinese lunar calendar follows a 12-year cycle that has a different animal for each date mark and repeats every 12 years. The Year of the Mouse is always first and the Year of the Pig is always last, with the Year of the Dragon falling fifth in the cycle. The Year of the Dragon honors those born under its sign as noble, honorable, lucky, and successful.
