The design of the Isle of Man Angel Gold Coin is inspired by the English gold coin known as the angel, a coin that was itself inspired by a French coin. The English Angel gold coin was issued from 1465 during the reign of King Edward IV until 1642 and the reign of King Charles I.
Obverse
On the obverse of 2012 Isle of Man Angel 1 oz Gold Coins is the Diamond Jubilee effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty ascended to the throne in 1952, making 2012 the 50th anniversary of her reign. The Diamond Jubilee effigy features two right-profile portraits of Elizabeth II. A modern portrait is featured in the foreground with the first portrait of her reign in the background. The inscriptions on this field include Elizabeth II, Isle of Man, and 2012.
Reverse
The reverse side of 2012 Isle of Man Angel Gold Coins features the image of St. Michael. In this design, the archangel is shown with a shield bearing the Christian cross and a long spear in his right hand that he uses to slay the fire-breathing dragon. The inscriptions include AU 999.9 1 OUNCE and 1/2 ANGEL.
History
The English angel coin was inspired by a French coin introduced in 1340 using the design concept of St. Michael slaying a dragon. The imagery was revived in 1984 by the Pobjoy Mint for the Isle of Man.
