The Mexican Libertad Coin Series was introduced by the Mexican Mint in 1981. Originally available in gold, the series was inspired by the legendary 1921 Centenario gold coin. Each 2012 Mexican Libertad 1 Kilo Silver Coin is protected in a high-quality plastic capsule to preserve its condition. The 1 Kilo Silver Libertad is the largest coin available in the Silver Libertad Series, with the 1/20 oz coin being the smallest. The 1 Kilo version was first introduced in 2008, and the 2012 coin is the fourth issue in this weight.

Obverse

The obverse of the 2012 Mexican Libertad Silver Coin features the national coat of arms of Mexico. The central design shows the modern coat of arms, surrounded by 10 historical versions of the seal, all of which date back to the Codex Mendoza from 1524. This adds a rich historical layer to the coins design. The inscriptions include ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS.

Reverse

On the reverse of the 2012 Libertad 1 Kilo Silver Coin is the image of Winged Victory. This striking figure is shown just as it appears atop the Mexican Independence Victory Column in Mexico City, with the beautiful volcanic peaks of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl in the background. The inscriptions read 1 KG, PLATA PURA, 2012 LEY, .999, and the mint mark.

History

Historically, the 1 Kilo Silver Libertad has had the lowest mintages in the series, with the 2011 release reaching 6,000 coins. After the 2012 release, the 1 Kilo size was discontinued for 2013 and 2014, making this coin a rare find for collectors and investors alike.
