The Mexican Mint, founded in 1535, holds the title of the oldest mint in the Americas. Originally responsible for striking coins for Spains colonial territories, it now produces official bullion for Mexico. One of its most popular issues is the Gold Libertad, which has been minted since 1981. Provident Metals is offering the 2012 Mexican Libertad 1 oz Gold Coin to customers today.
Highlights:
Your 2012 Mexican Libertad 1 oz Gold Coin will be housed in a protective plastic flip. In 2012, the Mexican Mint made a notable decision to issue only the 1 oz size in the Gold Libertad series. This marked the first time in over a decade, since 2000, that the fractional versions were not produced.
Obverse
The obverse design of 2012 Mexican Libertad Gold Coins displays Mexicos current coat of arms at the center. A golden eagle, in the midst of consuming a snake, is perched on a cactus. Around it, ten historic variations of this emblem are shown, including the oldest version from the 1524 Codex Mendoza positioned at the top. Inscriptions include ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS.
Reverse
On the reverse of 2012 Libertad 1 oz Gold Coins, Winged Victory stands tall above Mexico City. The design includes the twin volcanoes Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl in the background, offering an added layer of cultural and geographic significance. Inscriptions read 1 ONZA, ORO PURO, 2012 LEY .999, and the Mo mint mark.
History
The reverse of this coin features Winged Victory, also known as the Angel of Independence. This iconic monument, located in Mexico City, was completed in 1910 to celebrate 100 years of independence. The statue portrays Nike, the goddess of victory from Greek mythology, holding symbols of triumph and freedom.
