Obverse

President George Washington is depicted on the obverse side of the 2012-P Burnished ATB Denali 5 oz Silver Coin. The first man to serve as President of the United States of America, Washington set the standard for presidential tenure by voluntarily stepping down after two terms. Other presidents would follow this voluntary model until President Franklin D. Roosevelt during World War II. This bust of Washington was created in 1932 by John Flanagan and has been in use on the circulation quarter since that time.

Reverse

A Dall sheep is depicted high in the mountain ranges surrounding Denali National Park and Preserve in Alaska on the reverse of the 2012-P Burnished ATB Denali 5 oz Silver Coin. The design focuses on the Dall sheep in the foreground, leaving the towering peak at Denali to loom large in the distant background field.

History

Known simply as Denali, the mountain peak at Denali is the highest in North America. The mountain was formerly known as Mount McKinley and was named for the eventual 25th President of the United States by a native Ohioan traveling through Alaska while McKinley was running for president. Denali is the third most prominent and third most isolated mountain peak in the entire world.
