The Chinese dragon can symbolize power, success, luck and good fortune. It was the symbol on the coins in the Perth Mint’s Lunar Series II program for 2012 because that year was the year of the dragon. The 2012-P Australian Lunar Dragon 1 oz Silver Coin is one of the coins in that series.
Highlights
Obverse
The border of the obverse side of this coin carries the inscriptions ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA, 1 OZ 999 SILVER, 1 DOLLAR and 2012. These words surround an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, which was created by Ian Rank-Broadley. The IRB effigy is the fifth of six effigies of the queen made for coins. It was used in mintages of Australian coins from 1998 to September 2018.
Reverse
Inscriptions also adorn the reverse of the 2012-P Australian Lunar Dragon Silver Coin. In English along the bottom it says YEAR OF THE DRAGON. In the middle of the design, a Chinese character appears that means DRAGON. The dragon itself circles over and under the character and appears to be reaching excitedly for a pearl of wisdom nested on the right field of the coin.
Packaging
These coins arrive in protective plastic slabs from the NGC. PF69 coins have full, original mint luster and a maximum of two minor flaws. These detractions are limited to minuscule contact marks or hairlines and must be outside the primary focal points. Early Release coins are those received for certification within 30 days of release from the mint.
History
The history of the dragon as a symbol dates back thousands of years. There are carved figures of dragons that date back to 4,000 BCE, and the dragon has represented Chinese emperors and heroes in myths and legends.
