The United States Mint created the First Spouse Series to recognize the First Ladies who supported the nations presidents. However, for the 2012 release honoring President Chester A. Arthurs term, there was no First Lady to feature. In a unique decision, the Mint instead honored suffragist Alice Paul. Today, Provident Metals offers the 2012-W US Mint First Spouse Alice Paul 1/2 oz Gold Coin.
Highlights:
Each 2012-W US Mint First Spouse Alice Paul 1/2 oz Gold Coin is graded MS70 by PCGS, meaning it retains its original mint luster with no visible flaws. Alice Paul remains the only woman honored in the First Spouse Series who was not married to a U.S. President. The slabbed coin also includes a hand-signed label from David Hall, co-founder of PCGS.
Obverse
The obverse of the 2012-W US Mint First Spouse Alice Paul Gold Coin features Alice Paul, honoring her contributions to the womens suffrage movement. She played a key role in the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920, which granted women the right to vote, and later wrote the Equal Rights Amendment in 1923. Her lifelong work centered on securing equal rights for women in the U.S. Constitution. Inscriptions read ALICE PAUL, IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, 2012, SUFFRAGIST, and the W mint mark.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 2012-W First Spouse Alice Paul 1/2 oz Gold Coin, a suffragette is depicted marching with an American flag, wearing a VOTES FOR WOMEN sash. This image symbolizes the determination of those who fought for womens voting rights in the early 20th century. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, $10, 1/2 OZ., and .9999 FINE GOLD.
History
Chester A. Arthurs presidency is one of the few in American history without a First Lady. His wife, Nell Arthur, passed away in 1880, leaving him a widower before he assumed office after President James A. Garfields assassination.
