Before her passing in 1892, Caroline Harrison gave a speech at the Daughters of the American Revolutions first continental congress. If there is no abatement in this element of success in our ranks, I feel sure their daughters can perpetuate a society worthy of the cause and worthy of themselves. Harrison passed away just eight months later, however, her message that women can contribute more to society rings true to this day. The U.S. Mint paid tribute to Caroline Harrison with her on the obverse of the 23rd entry in the First Spouse Gold Coin Program. History
The Presidential One Dollar Coin Act of 2005 authorized the United States Mint to issue a series of coins to celebrate the legacies of American Presidents and alongside it the First Spouse Gold Coin Program. The series commemorates the lives and legacies of the first ladies of the United States of America. The 23rd entry, issued in 2012, celebrates Caroline Harrison. The former first lady was known for her love of flowers, particularly orchids as she made them the official floral decoration at state receptions. She was also known for her love of painting, even taking weekly painting classes during her time as first lady.
