The 2013 1/10 Oz Mexican Silver Libertad is an excellent way to join the precious metals investment market, especially if you are interested in foreign currency.
Resembling an angel blessing the countryside from on high, the reverse of each coin features winged Victoria on the Mexican Independence Victory Column, El Angel de la Independenia.
Twin volcanoes Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl are in the distant background. Inscribed near the rim are the words 1/10 ONZA, PLATA PURA, and 2013 LEY .999. The mint mark hovers over the volcano to the right.
The reverse of each coin features a close look at the coat of arms of Mexico, including the eagle preparing to eat the serpent. The words ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS arch above the fierce bird of prey.
The symbol of the golden eagle devouring the serpent had strong religious connotations to the Aztecs, and came to symbolize victory over evil to the European colonists.
The coat of arms harkens back to the legendary founding of Tenochtitlan, now known as Mexico City. In the legend, the prickly pear cactus represents the island that became Tenochtitlan. The snake represented wisdom, and was related to the god Quetzalcoatl.
The golden eagle represented the sun god Huitzilopochtli, and its victory over the snake was particularly significant, as the city’s founders referred to themselves as the “People of the Sun.” Thus, the triumph of the eagle was also their victory.
