Obverse

On the obverse of the 2013 Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coin, youll find Queen Elizabeth II in a right-facing design. This portrait was created by Susanna Blunt and introduced in 2004. It is the fourth overall effigy of the Queen on Canadian coins and the third to appear on this series. The design is noted for its simplicity, showing the Queen without a crown. Inscriptions include ELIZABETH II, 5 DOLLARS, and 2013.

Reverse

The reverse of the 2013 Maple Leaf 1/10 oz Gold Coin features the sugar maple leaf, a symbol deeply tied to Canadas national identity. Created by Walter Ott, the image has been used on Gold Maple Leafs from the beginning. Its a familiar icon in Canadian government, business, and sports. The inscriptions here include CANADA, 9999, FINE GOLD, and 1/10 OZ OR PUR.

History

The series was first launched to provide an alternative to the South African Gold Krugerrand, which was the only widely available gold coin at the time. With economic sanctions against South Africa during the apartheid era, the Gold Maple Leaf quickly gained ground as a trusted bullion coin in the global market.
