Designed by Susanna Blunt in 2003, the obverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Inscriptions include Her Majesty’s name, the coin’s denomination, and the year of issue.
The reverse features the iconic polar bear roaming its frozen, arctic habitat. Canada is home to one of the world’s largest populations of polar bears, though they are considered a vulnerable species. Yet, the polar bear is known as one of few species to survive in the harsh, frigid climate, making the bear a symbol of power and resilience.
The Silver Polar Bear was the first 1.5 oz silver bullion coin minted by the Royal Canadian Mint. It started a series that later went on to feature wildlife of the Canadian arctic like the arctic fox and snow falcon. The coins have the same diameter as standard issue RCM silver coins, but they are 50 percent thicker to accommodate the extra metal content.
Founded in 1908, the Royal Canadian Mint originally processed precious metals discovered in the Yukon Territories. The nation’s own minting capacity was the first step toward Canadian independence.
Individual Polar Bears coins ship in plastic flips. Multiples of 15 ship in plastic tubes and multiples of 300 ship in a monster box.

As with all the Canadian Wildlife Series coins, this one does not disappoint. Beautiful coin with supurb detail and luster. Hopefully someone manufactures a case for it soon since it’s much thicker than the 1 oz coin.

Gorgeous coin with a mirror like finish. It has some nice heft to it as well. The only complaint I have is the Queen is also bigger on this coin :). Great service from Provident. They packed the RCM tube nicely so there wouldn’t be any damage due to the coins moving around during shipment.

The same great design and finish that I have come to expect from the Canadian Mint. This 1 and a half oz. coin is beautiful and is very thick. a standard airtight doesn’t fully close. I will move quick when additional designs become available.
