Fort McHenry National Monument just may be one of the most important historical sites featured in the America the Beautiful silver coins series from the United States Mint. It was here, during the War of 1812, that a song was written that would eventually become the official national anthem of the United States of America. Today, you have the opportunity to purchase 2013 ATB Fort McHenry 5 oz Silver Coins in near-perfect condition online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Fort McHenry is preserved to this day along the shores of Baltimore Harbor as a symbol of American victory over the British at the Battle of Baltimore during the War of 1812. For more than a day, the British Navy bombarded the fort from the harbor, but the structure itself and the American soldiers defending it and the city emerged victorious in the morning. Their victory lead Francis Scott Key to pen a poem that would become a song eventually adopted as the national anthem.
Obverse
On the obverse side of the coin is the image of President George Washington. The first President of the United States of America, Washington is depicted here in left-profile relief in a 1932 design from John Flanagan.
Reverse
The reverse face of 2013 ATB Fort McHenry 5 oz Silver Coins features the image of Fort McHenry in the middle ground with a massive American flag flying over its ramparts. In the air overhead, mortar shells from British Navy vessels in the harbor explode. Despite the intense bombardment, the American forces inside the fort survived the night. When the battle started, a storm flag measuring 17 ft x 25 ft flew above the fort. In the morning, the Americans showed their defiance and eventual victory in raising a larger battle flag over the fort that measured 30 ft x 42 ft.
History
Fort McHenry was instrumental in the eventual American victory in the War of 1812. It showed that the fledgling nation was capable of holding its ground, once again, against the mighty British Empire. The British Navy tried, in vain, to destroy the fort and take control of Baltimore Harbor, but proved unsuccessful in doing so.
Ordering
These 2013 ATB Fort McHenry 5 oz Silver Coins are available to purchase online in near-perfect condition. Each one has a Mint State 69 certification that means the coins have full, original mint luster and a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. Those flaws are limited to minuscule contact marks or hairlines. Though these are bullion coins, the PCGS notes them as DMPL. This means deeply-mirrored proof-like, and indicates the coins have slightly mirrored fields and frosted elements.
