Obverse
Queen Elizabeth II is on the obverse of 2013 Australian Kangaroo Gold Coins. This effigy of the Queen is a right-profile relief designed in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley. This portrait captures Elizabeth II wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. This side of the coin has inscriptions of ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA, and 100 DOLLARS.
Reverse
For the reverse design of 2013 Kangaroo 1 oz Gold Coins, Perth Mint offers a new depiction of the kangaroo. In this design, the kangaroo is standing on its hind legs and looks out across the Outback as it stands in right-profile relief. This side of the coin has inscriptions that read AUSTRALIAN KANGAROO, 2013 1 OZ 9999 GOLD, and the P mint mark of Perth Mint.
History
Australian Kangaroo Gold Coins were introduced by Perth Mint in late 1986. The series was originally marketed as the Australian Nugget and featured separate designs for each weight, but used the same image each year. The transition to the Australian Kangaroo brought new images of the kangaroo each year, but the same one was used on each weight.
