The Lunar Series II issued by the Perth Mint is one of the most popular lunar-themed collections across the world. First introduced in 2008, the Lunar Series II followed the positive reception that the original Lunar Series saw. The Lunar Series II coins feature more intricate designs and equal demand from investors and collectors alike. Each of the 2013 Australian Lunar Snake 1 oz Silver Coins contains 1 Troy oz of .999 pure silver, and has a face value of $1 that is fully backed by the Australian government. The coins have earned the MS69 grade, which means that they are near perfect specimens. They are delivered to you secured in a protective plastic slab by the NGC.
Highlights:
The Lunar Series II of coins issued by the Perth Mint features new designs each year to pay tribute to a different animal in the Chinese Zodiac. The coin series debuted in 1996 with the release of the first lunar coins, and continued immediately in 2008 at the conclusion of the original series in 2007.
In the Lunar calendar, the snake is the sixth animal. Each reverse design from the Perth Mint offers a design that highlights the creature whose image appears in the Zodiac that particular year.
Your 2013 Australian Lunar Snake 1 oz Silver Coin earned MS69 grades from the NGC. Coins in this condition are considered near-perfect specimens. These coins exhibit full, original mint luster, but also feature minor detracting flaws such as minor hairlines and contact marks.
Obverse
The obverse design of the 2013 Australian Lunar Snake 1 oz Silver Coin features the right-profile effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. The image was imagined in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley. It is the fourth-generation portrait of Her Majesty used on coinage since she took the throne in 1952.
Reverse
The reverse design of the 2013 Australian Lunar Snake 1 oz Silver Coin features the 2013 Year of the Snake design issued by the Perth Mint. The design features a snake that is coiled around the branch of a tree. On the reverse are engravings that identify the series and the P mint mark of the Perth Mint.
The Perth Mint is the oldest operating facility in Australia. It was established in 1899, as a part of the British Royal Mint system. Today the Perth Mint is a state-owned entity of Western Australia and enjoys legal tender status under the Currency Act of 1965.
