The Lunar Series II of coins issued by the Perth Mint features new designs each year to pay tribute to a different animal in the Chinese Zodiac. The coin series debuted in 1996 with the release of the first lunar coins, and continued immediately in 2008 at the conclusion of the original series in 2007.

In the Lunar calendar, the snake is the sixth animal. Each reverse design from the Perth Mint offers a design that highlights the creature whose image appears in the Zodiac that particular year.
