The reverse of this coin celebrates this momentous turning point. On it, old King Saul listens pensively in the background. A young David plays his lyre in the foreground. The crown is in bright contrast to the thin-lined portrait of Saul, marking the impending transition from one king to another.
The obverse includes the words DAVID PLAYING FOR SAUL 1 SAMUEL 16 in English, Hebrew and Arabic around the rim. The face value of 1 New Sheqel is indicated on the right, with the Israel State Emblem to the left. A lyre is on the lower half.
