The Perth Mint’s Austral Lunar coin series celebrates the tradition of the Chinese zodiac and the identification of its symbolic beasts with the cycle of the lunar calendar year. Obverse
Ian Rank-Broadley’s effigy of the late Queen Elizabeth II is the centerpiece of the obverse field, confirming it as Australian legal tender. Surrounding her are the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II,” “AUSTRALIA,” “1 KG 999 SILVER,” “2013” and “30 DOLLARS.”
Reverse
The reverse field is dominated by an engraving of a Snake wrapped around a tree limb, along with inscriptions “YEAR OF THE SNAKE” in both English and Pinyin characters.
History
The first issue of the Australian Lunar Silver coin came out in 1999. The quality of the coins swiftly impressed the collectors’ market, making this series’ issues some of the world’s most popular modern investment coins. There have been multiple sub-series as the full cycle of the Chinese lunar year and its zodiac symbols have come back around to the first zodiac. The system of Chinese classical Elements interlocks with that calendar system to produce variants in the interpretations of specific signs. For example, this Year of the Snake coin from 2013 also commemorates the classic element of Water, associated with Snakes who are especially clever, creative, and communicative.

All orders of $199 or more that are eligible for free shipping are, by default, shipped via a carrier of our choice (USPS or UPS). Depending on the contents and size of your purchase, you may be able to upgrade to a specific carrier during checkout.
For those orders of $999.99 or less, there is no need to sign for your package. However, you may select the option to require a signature at delivery if you want. This can be chosen and paid for at checkout. All orders of $1000 or more require a signature to complete delivery.
Provident is only able to ship to addresses in any of the 50 US states. This includes P.O. boxes and APO addresses.
