The Mexican Mint, also known as La Casa de Moneda de Mxico, has a rich history dating back to 1535, making it the oldest mint in the Americas. It was originally created to strike coins for Spains colonies in the New World and today issues Mexicos official bullion coinage. The Mexican Libertad Series, introduced in 1981, is one of its flagship releases. Provident Metals currently offers the 2013 Mexican Libertad 1 oz Gold Coin.
Highlights:
Each 2013 Mexican Libertad 1 oz Gold Coin is secured in a protective plastic flip. The 2013 release marked a return to a full lineup of weights for the Gold Libertad Series, following the 2012 issue that featured only the 1 oz coin. This return aligned the series with its traditional release structure.
Obverse
The obverse design of 2013 Mexican Libertad Gold Coins includes the modern national seal of Mexico in the center. This image is encircled by 10 earlier versions of the seal used throughout Mexican history, including one from the Codex Mendoza, an early colonial manuscript. The inscriptions include ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS.
Reverse
The reverse of the 2013 Libertad 1 oz Gold Coin presents the famous statue of Winged Victory, a symbol of Mexican independence. She is shown standing in front of the volcanic peaks of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl, two landmarks tied to Aztec legend and Mexican identity. The inscriptions read 1 ONZA, ORO PURO, 2013 LEY .999, and the Mo mint mark.
History
On the obverse side of the coin, youll find Mexicos national coat of arms. This symbol has taken various forms since independence, drawing on the legend of an eagle devouring a snake while standing on a cactus. The current version, adopted in 1968, shows a golden eagle standing on a prickly pear cactus growing from a rock surrounded by water, with a rattlesnake in its beak and claws.
