Obverse
The obverse of the 2013 Mexican Libertad coin is extremely interesting visually. There’s a lot going on, and it takes a lengthy study to unpack it all. Around the border are 10 coats of arms used at various times in Mexican history. All depict the Mexican golden eagle with various other symbols. In the center is the current National Shield with the inscription ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS.

Reverse
The reverse side is less visually busy but still interesting. The artist has combined two iconic symbols of Mexico in the same visual field. First, there’s the statue of the Angel of Independence, or Winged Victoria. She is a commemoration of Mexico’s independence and actually stands in a street in Mexico City. On the coin, she’s backed by the volcanic mountains Popocatpetl and Iztacchuatl, which are important to the landscape, history and myths of the Mexican people. Inscriptions include 1 ONZA, PLATA PURA and 2013 LEY .999.
