The reverse showcases a pair of koalas, a mother and her joey, climbing a branch. The mother holds tight with all four of her opposable paws while the joey clings to her back, peeking out at the viewer.
A frosted finish brings the diamond-shaped sign to the foreground, where the words 1 OZ .999 AG line the bottom-left edge. The coin shines with a polished finish for the background, including a hexagonal shape and Australian stars from the flag.
The reverse shows Queen Elizabeth in a formal portrait. The words ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIAN 2014, and 1 DOLLAR are on this side.
This charming coin is modeled after “koala crossing” souvenir signs popular with tourists — though it is unlikely a driver would ever see a live koala. The marsupials come down from the trees only once a day, usually to switch eucalyptus trees for new food.
