Celebrate a cultural and religious treasure with the 2013 Jordan River Silver NIS 1 commemorative coin from the Holy Land Mint.
The Jordan River is prominent in both Judaism and Christianity, and has become one of the most popular tourist sites in Israel. Religious tourists come to be baptized in the waters, much as Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist in the Bible, Matthew 3:13-17.
Each coin is composed of 14.40 grams of .925 sterling silver and has a diameter of 30 mm. Only 1,800 of the coins were minted.
The reverse shows a calming view of the Jordan River as it is today. Reeds wave in the foreground while Hermon Mountain range rises in the background. JORDAN RIVER is written in Hebrew, Arabic and English to the top left.
The obverse includes a top-down view of the Jordan River as it would appear on a map. The face value of 1 New Sheqel is noted on the right half, with the Israel State Emblem on the left. The word ISRAEL is written in English, Hebrew and Arabic on the left rim.
The Jordan River is the lowest river in the world, in addition to its rich cultural significance, making it an incredibly popular site in Israel.
