Highlights:
PCGS, or the Professional Coin Grading Service, gave each of these coins a perfect PR70 grade. Coins given this grade will be fully struck and free of visual marks, but some very minor flaws are allowed as long as they are as minted defects and dont detract from the eye appeal of the coin.
The coins have also been given a Deep Cameo, or DCAM, designation. This means that the devices of the coin are heavily frosted, while the background has a deep mirror finish. These coins have a great deal of contrast between the two surfaces.
Proof strikes like these are created using polished dies that are struck with extremely high levels of pressure. This process makes the rims and designs of the coins sharper and helps with the high level of contrast on the coins faces.
Obverse
Augustus Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle design is featured on the obverse of every American Eagle Gold Coin. This design showcases Lady Liberty as she walks with the sun shining at her back. In her hands, she carries an olive branch and a lit torch. The image was originally used on Gold Double Eagle Coins, which were first released in 1907.
Reverse
Sculptor Miley Busieks image of a family of bald eagles is on the reverse of these coins. In the 1986 design, you will find a large male eagle with an olive branch in his talons returning to his family nest. A female and hatchling are awaiting him. This design was made just for American Eagle Gold Coins.
History
American Eagle Gold Coins were initially released by the United States Mint in 1986. Each year, these coins are released in three versions: bullion, uncirculated, and proof. Now, they also come in silver, platinum, and palladium version, each with different designs.
