Designed by Miley Busiek, the scene shows a male eagle flying toward the nest while the female watches over the young. This reverse image was a mainstay of the Gold Eagle Series for decades. The inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUMM, IN GOD WE TRUST, 1 OZ FINE GOLD, and 50 DOLLARS.

History

Although the Gold Eagle Series debuted in 1986, the proof version was only produced in the 1 oz size at first. Fractional-proof coins followed shortly after, with the 1/2 oz coin arriving in 1987 and the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz coins joining in 1988.
