The United States Mint’s First Spouse Gold Coin Program celebrates the Presidential spouses who, throughout American history, have helped to shape history and the institutions of the White House in their own ways. One of the most short-lived of these figures, but still consequential, was Ellen Wilson. First Lady of President Woodrow Wilson, she was resident in the White House for only a year before being tragically laid low by Bright’s Disease, but she spent that brief time in a flurry of activity: promoting child labor laws and education programs, producing accomplished landscape and portrait paintings, and conceiving and overseeing the creation of the White House Rose Garden which has remained a famous fixture of the Presidential mansion ever since. The 2013-W Proof US Mint First Spouse Ellen Wilson 1/2 oz Gold Coin commemorates Mrs. Wilson’s fondness for roses and is now available for online purchase from Provident Metals.

History

The First Spouse Gold Coin program was set in motion by an act of Congress in 2005 and issued its first coins in 2007. From that year until 2016, it celebrated Presidential spouses in the chronological order in which they served, ranging from the time of Martha Washington all the way down to the era of Barbara Bush in the early Nineties. The coin dedicated to Ellen Wilson features the design work of award-winning artist Frank Morris and the sculpting talents of Charles L. Vickers.
