There are numerous features of the American cultural and historical landscape that are owed to a group of figures whose contributions aren’t always well known to the public. Those figures are America’s First Spouses, who are celebrated by the United States Mint’s First Spouse Gold Coin Program. The twenty-seventh entry in this series is devoted to Helen Taft, the First Lady of William Howard Taft, who served from 1909 through 1913 and built a legacy as a highly active Presidential spouse. She played an instrumental role in establishing the Smithsonian Institute’s First Ladies Collection and, famously, planted the first Japanese cherry trees in the Tidal Basin Park in Washington. The 2013-W Proof US Mint First Spouse Helen Taft 1/2 oz Gold Coin celebrates Mrs. Taft’s connection with cherry blossoms and is now available from Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Comes in an attractive wooden case with a Certificate of Authenticity!
  • Issued in 2013, 27th entry in the First Spouse Gold Coin program!
  • Drawn from a limited original mintage!
  • Contains 1/2 Troy oz of .9999 pure gold.
  • Face value of $10 backed by the American government.
  • Obverse side features a portrait of Helen Taft.
  • Reverse side features clusters of cherry blossoms.

The 2013-W Proof US Mint First Spouse Helen Taft Gold Coin is available nested in velvet in a beautiful wooden case along with a Certificate of Authenticity. These coins feature frosted foreground elements and mirrored backgrounds that identify a true proof-finish collectible.

Obverse

Helen Taft’s name and portrait appear on the obverse field, along with the West Point Mint’s “W” mint mark and the lettering “LIBERTY,” “2013,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “27th 1909 – 1913.”

Reverse

A group of cherry blossoms appears on the reverse side, accompanied by the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “$10,” and “1/2 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD.”

History

The U.S. Congress mandated the creation of a pair of coin series in 2005 with the Presidential One Dollar Coin Act: one commemorating American Presidents, and the other running concurrently to celebrate Presidential spouses. The latter series was called the First Spouse Gold Coin Program, issued between the years 2007 and 2016 to pay tribute to a chronological sequence of First Ladies dating from the emergence of the American Republic down to the early 1990s. Mrs. Taft’s coin features the sculpting skills of Phebe Hemphill and Charles Vickers and the design work of noted artist Richard Masters.
