This perfect coin contains 1 oz of .999 fine gold and 2013 is the 100-year anniversary of the Indian Head design. James Earle Fraser created the portrait from what is believed to be a combination of three American Indian chiefs on the obverse: Big Tree of the Kiowa, Iron Tail of the Lakota Sioux and Two Moons of the Cheyenne. The year and “LIBERTY” are inscribed as well.
Black Diamond, a 1,550-pound American bison, is featured on the reverse. There are contradicting reports that state where Fraser actually used the burly bison as a model, but Fraser was quoted in an article crediting Black Diamond as the model of the Buffalo design.
